Distant Light Acres
Our mission is to cultivate a compassionate, empowering, and inclusive farm-based community where adults with intellectual disabilities can thrive. We are dedicated to raising funds to establish a working farm that offers both residential care and meaningful employment opportunities tailored to each individual’s abilities and needs. At Distant Light Acres, we will celebrate every milestone—every breakthrough, every smile, every moment of courage. Because here, the race isn’t about beating the clock. It’s about finding your light, no matter how far away it may seem, and knowing you’re never running alone.
Phase One
We are in phase one of our mission which includes finding land of at least 10 acres. Upon purchasing the land, our first goal will be to establish a working garden and have a chicken coop/run. We will offer employment to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities interested in farming and gardening within our community. We will setup a farmer’s market and encourage the adults to sell the produce they have grown and tended. Along with growing produce, we will teach those in the employment program to grow herbs and how to use those herbs to create herbal remedies. We are also praying for a building we will use for worship & bible study for the adults interested in attending. Summer Camps and Day Programs will likely be available in this phase.

Phase Two
In phase two, we will focus on building out homes for adults with Intellectual and Developmental diagnoses. The Community Living waiver and private payment are both options we intend to accept. We intend to have a main house to host (3-5) adults who need round the clock supervision and care. We aim to create an RV style park for those who are able to live independently. Options for housing adults with Intellectual and Developmental diagnoses is severely limited in Virginia. At Distant Light Acres, we are not just focusing on nursing care, but the providing resources to sustain the whole person. We intend to provide furthering education options, employment, recreation, and life skills to every individual. We need your help to do this!

Our Why

As a mom, I know how scary it is to think of our children’s future when they have an Intellectual or Developmental Diagnosis. My son loves to be outdoors and watch the chickens play. I don’t ever want to worry he will be locked up in a hospital setting & not getting to enjoy life on the farm he loves so much. We are committed to bringing a safe place and space to the Culpeper area so our community can live a life they love.
